The on-going public argument is paper vs. plastic shopping bags. If you are trying to decide which is best, the answer may be neither, but re-usable shopping bags instead. Here’s why.

Statistics are difficult to come by or attribute, but the Environmental Protection Agency reports U.S. consumption tops more than 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps every year. Some numbers put global usage at 500 to one trillion bags. Paper bags are less prevalent in modern times but represent approximately 100 million per year in the United States. What any statistic tells us is that a huge amount of material is being consumed and wasted.

The life cycle of these two products is very different. Plastic bags are made from oil while paper is made from trees. If either goes to a landfill it will be forever before they degrade. Paper requires moisture and air to biodegrade. Plastic requires sunlight to break down into smaller particles through a process called photodegradation. Neither of which are available in a modern closed landfill. If the bag goes to the recycling stream, the plastic reclaim rate is less than 25%. For paper, various statistics indicate 60-70% is reclaimed. Depending on which party you listen to, plastic, which comes from oil, is causing all kinds of socio-economic and environmental harm in the world and paper is consuming our forests and destroying the air and water. But, somehow, the argument continues.

Both arguments are missing the point. The issue isn’t paper vs. plastic but disposable vs. re-usable. Re-usable shopping bags are the superior choice by any measurement. They be made from sustainable and organically grown materials. They do not fill up landfills as they can be composted after many years of use. Imagine only two years of paper and plastic bags usage by a community piled up in your backyard. Now imagine one re-usable shopping bag for those same households piled up in your backyard. Now imagine those same piles over a lifetime! For convenience, let’s assume each household keeps one in each vehicle and in the house for quick usage. The impact would still be far less to our world. A small change in personal choice makes a tremendous impact in our world.

Making the correct lifestyle choice sometimes means looking beyond the public information presented to us by paid media and industry associations.
